"I Didn't Realize I was Tight There"
One of the things I hear most often during a massage is, "I didn't realize I was tight there." Sometimes it's followed by, "Wow, I'm holding more than I thought."
It usually happens when I start working somewhere that wasn't on the client's radar. Maybe it's their jaw, their hips, their hands, or a spot between the shoulder blades they've stopped noticing because it's been tense for so long. And every time I hear it, I'm reminded of something important: we don't always know what's happening in our bodies.
Most of us spend a lot of our day in our heads—thinking, planning, solving problems, moving from one task to the next. Our attention is focused on work, family, responsibilities, and whatever needs us next. It's not that we're ignoring our bodies; it's that we're often receiving so much information from the outside world that we stop noticing the information coming from within.
One of the things I love most about massage is that it creates an opportunity to check back in. As tension begins to soften, people often become aware of things they hadn't noticed before. Maybe their shoulders have been creeping toward their ears all week. Maybe they've been clenching their jaw. Maybe they've been holding their breath without realizing it. Sometimes clients discover they're carrying far more stress, fatigue, or tension than they thought.
Awareness is often the first step toward change. Before we can release tension, address stress, or make different choices, we usually have to notice what's there in the first place. That's one reason massage can feel so impactful. Beyond helping sore muscles or creating relaxation, it gives us a chance to reconnect with ourselves and gather information we may have been missing.
I think that's why so many people leave a session feeling lighter. Not just because their muscles have relaxed, but because they've spent an hour paying attention in a way they rarely do. They've had the opportunity to slow down, listen, and ask themselves a simple question: How am I doing, really?
If you've been feeling stressed, disconnected, or like you've been running on autopilot lately, consider this your reminder to check in with yourself. Whether that's through massage, a walk without your phone, a few quiet moments at the end of the day, or a Nervous System Reset session, you might be surprised by what you notice when you finally pause long enough to listen.
