What even is a muscle knot? Let’s dig into what they are, and why they form!

First, let’s talk about muscle tissue. Muscle fibers are layered from head to toe, running in different directions to allow us to bend, twist, dance, and move freely.

Muscles are meant to be strong, flexible, and mobile. When they’re in good shape, they can adapt, stretch, and relax as we need them to.

But when we stay in the same position too long, like sitting at a desk, or if we experience stress, injury, or even dehydration, muscles can start to stiffen. When muscles are overstretched, forced to spasm, or lack proper blood flow, fibers can start to stick together, leading to adhesions in the fascia and muscle tissue.

Over time, these adhesions create the tight, lumpy knots we feel.

Bad posture, especially slouching, can make this worse. When we hunch forward, chest muscles become tight, while upper back and neck muscles are overstretched and weakened.

These back muscles are forced to work harder to support the head and shoulders, leading to spasms, tension, and, eventually, those painful knots we often feel between our shoulder blades. These 'knots’ restrict movement, reduce blood flow, and cause pain. They’re more than just a nuisance—they impact flexibility and overall comfort.

The good news? You can release them!

Effective ways include:

  • Self-massage with a foam roller or massage ball

  • Stretching, hydration, and gentle movement

  • Professional massage and myofascial release therapy
