Finding Flow: What a Canoe Trip Taught Me About Rest and Reconnection

As you’re reading this, I’ve just finished a canoe trip along the Green River outside Moab, Utah. My brother turned 40 this year, and to celebrate, our family took to the water — paddling, swimming, laughing, and getting beautifully dusty together.

These annual canoe trips have become one of my favorite family traditions. There’s something about floating through canyon walls, watching the light shift throughout the day, and feeling completely unplugged that brings me back to myself.

Before I became a massage therapist, I worked as an outdoor guide, and canoe trips were always my favorite. They invite such a natural rhythm — movement balanced with stillness, effort balanced with ease. It’s a lesson I carry into my work as a bodyworker every day: that healing happens when we give ourselves permission to slow down and float for a while.

Whether it’s an hour on the massage table or a few days on the river, these pauses are what help us reset and reconnect — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

What are the moments or traditions that help you slow down and come back to yourself? Maybe it’s walking at sunset, sitting by the ocean, or even taking a deep breath before your day starts.

I’d love to hear what helps you feel most connected. 🌿

If your body’s been asking for a pause, book a session at Sol Massage and let’s help you find your own flow again — no canoe required.
