Polyvagal Theory: What It Is and How It Connects to Massage Therapy

Have you ever felt frozen, overwhelmed, or like your body just couldn’t settle—even when everything seemed “fine”?

You’re not broken. Your body is responding the only way it knows how.

Thanks to Polyvagal Theory, developed by neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Porges, we now have a deeper understanding of how the nervous system works—and how we can gently support it through bodywork like massage.

🌿 What Is Polyvagal Theory?

Polyvagal Theory helps explain the way our nervous system shifts in response to our environment—especially when it comes to safety and connection.

It outlines three main nervous system states, each designed to protect us:

🟢 Ventral Vagal – Safe, Social & Connected

In this state, your body feels grounded and present. You can connect with others, breathe deeply, speak clearly, and access joy and curiosity.

🔴 Sympathetic – Fight or Flight

This is your body preparing to act. Your heart races, breath shortens, and muscles tense. You may feel anxious, agitated, or hyper-alert.

Dorsal Vagal – Freeze or Shutdown

When stress feels too intense to handle, your system may shut down. You might feel spacey, numb, disconnected, or fatigued.

🤍 Why It Matters

Your nervous system moves through these states all the time—and not consciously.
They’re protective, deeply wired responses to stress, overwhelm, or perceived threat.

You’re not "too sensitive."
You’re not overreacting.
You’re responding to your environment in the most intelligent way your body knows how.

But here’s the good news:
With time, awareness, and support, you can begin to shift your state.

💪 You Can Support Your System

Polyvagal Theory doesn’t just explain what’s happening—it gives us tools to respond.
You don’t have to stay stuck in stress mode. You can begin to move toward regulation.

Here are a few ways to invite your system to soften:

  • 🌬️ Deep, diaphragmatic breathing

  • 🦶 Time in nature and barefoot grounding

  • 💆‍♀️ Massage and myofascial release

  • 🤝 Safe-enough social connection

  • 🎵 Music, rhythm, and ritual

These tools don’t force your body to feel safe.
But they invite your system to feel just enough support to begin releasing tension—one breath, one moment at a time.

💆‍♀️ How Massage Supports Your Nervous System

At Sol Massage in San Diego, my sessions are designed with nervous system care in mind.
That means:

  • I move slowly to help your body feel safe

  • I incorporate grounding techniques to invite regulation

  • I blend massage, myofascial release, breath awareness, and presence to support a shift out of stress

Touch can be a powerful reminder to your system:
You’re not alone. You don’t have to stay on high alert. You can come home to yourself.
